With technological advances in addition to movements such as the RepRap movement, 3D printers have gotten far cheaper and more accessible. Therefore, we felt it necessary to create our list of the 15 best cheap 3D printer machines of 2018. We’ve divided these into several categories, the best 3D printer under $100, the best cheap 3D printers under $300, the best cheap 3D printers under $500, and the best cheap 3D printers under $1,000.

Best 3D Printer Under $100

iMakr STARTT

  • Company based: UK.
  • Price: $99.
  • Print volume: 120 x 140 x 130 mm.

If you’re a beginner and on a shoestring budget, the iMakr STARTT is the perfect cheap 3D printer for you. Retailing at just $99, the STARTT is the best 3D printer under $100, though as a 3D printer kit you will have to assemble it yourself. Made by successful British company iMakr, this cheap 3D printer has a print volume of up to 120 x 140 x 130 mm, not bad for the price!

As it’s open source, the iMakr STARTT can be modified to your heart’s desire. This low cost 3D printer is accurate up to 100 microns for layer resolution, and takes around 5 hours to assemble. Though this isn’t as quick as the Creality CR-10, it costs $270 less, making it perfect for beginners.

Best 3D Printer Under $300

Anet A8 $200

  • Company based: China.
  • Price: Around $200.
  • Print volume: 220 x 220 x 240 mm.

Anet are a Chinese 3D printer manufacturer who took the Prusa kit model and created their own low cost FDM 3D printer. Whilst retaining the heated bed and the ability to print ABS and PETG, the Anet A8 only costs around $200 compared to just under $1,000 for the Prusa if you buy it assembled.

This cheap 3D printer is also very reliable for the low price. With a minimum layer size of 100 microns, the Anet A8 offers decent quality for the low price, too. Though it is $100 more than the STARTT, the Anet A8 offers a far larger print volume, at 220 x 220 x 240 mm. Overall, it’s another fantastic cheap 3D printing option.

Monoprice MP Maker Select

  • Company based in: USA
  • Price: $299
  • Build volume: 200 x 200 x 180 mm.

Monoprice are an FDM 3D printer manufacturer from the USA who have been hard at work making 3D printers since 2002. Their most recent cheap 3D printer is the Maker Select, costing just $299. The Maker Select is a dual extruder 3D printer, capable of printing two colors or materials simultaneously.

Offering a minimum layer thickness of 100 microns, the Maker Select is an accurate cheap 3D printer. It weighs in at just 20 pounds, and is small enough to fit wherever it’s put. In terms of materials, the Maker Select can print a fairly wide range, including ABS, PLA, PET, PVA, and HIPS. With a print volume of 200 x 200 x 180 mm, the Maker Select is a versatile and reliable cheap 3D printer which is perfect for beginners or makers after a low cost printer.

XYZprinting Da Vinci Mini

  • Company based: Taiwan.
  • Price: $189.
  • Print volume: 150 x 150 x 150 mm.

By far one of the cheapest 3D printers on our list, the Da Vinci Mini is another highly rated cheap 3D printer made by XYZprinting. Designed to be simple to use and print small objects quickly, the Da Vinci Mini has a minimum layer thickness of 0.1mm and retails at just $189!

The Taiwanese company has been making waves in the industry for some time, creating some of the best cheap FDM 3D printers of the last few years. The Da Vinci Mini is no exception, combining its decent 150 x 150 x 150 mm print volume with adequate quality in a great 3D printer for beginners.

CoLiDo DIY

  • Company based: USA.
  • Price: $200 / £199
  • Print volume: 200 x 200 x 170 mm.

Another 3D printer kit (and don’t forget to check out our ranking of the 10 Best DIY 3D printer kits!), the CoLiDo DIY is a great, cheap 3D printer that can be assembled easily. The printer comes in five main parts, with a few wires and bolts to assemble these pieces together. American company CoLiDo are experienced in the 3D printing sector, having also created resin SLA 3D printers in the past.

This 3D printer kit has a great print volume at 200 x 200 x 170 mm. It can be easily accessed via USB, and has a minimum layer thickness during print of 0.1mm. The printer does not come with a heated bed however and can therefore only print PLA.

Best 3D Printer Under $500

Creality CR-10

  • Company based: China.
  • Price: $370.
  • Print volume: 300 x 300 x 400 mm.

There’s a reason the Creality CR-10 keeps popping up in our year-end ‘best of’ lists every year, it’s fantastic. This cheap 3D printer is made by Chinese manufacturer Creality and is a great DIY 3D printer which you can assemble in just 45 minutes.

Despite costing just $370, the Creality CR-10 can compete with 3D printers which cost ten times that price. This cheap 3D printer can print with a layer thickness of 0.05mm, and has a huge build volume for the price, at 300 x 300 x 400 mm. It’s not the prettiest, but it dominates its competitors in its price range and has a devoted following as a result.

Flashforge Finder

  • Company based: China.
  • Price: $399-499.
  • Print volume: 140 x 140 x 140 mm.

It’s inevitable that if you look for a good, cheap 3D printer, you’ll come across Flashforge machines. One of the major players in the cheap 3D printer industry, Flashforge’s entry-level machine, the Finder, is a great piece of kit for the price. Available for between $399 and $499, the Flashforge Finder is one of the best cheap 3D printers under $500.

With a print volume of 140 x 140 x 140 mm, it isn’t huge, but it should be more than enough for day-to-day needs. It also has a bunch of useful features, including an end-of-filament detector and can be connected to via WiFi. It’s quite accurate too, with a minimum layer size of 0.05mm.

Wanhau Duplicator 7 V1.5

  • Company based: China.
  • Price: $399.
  • Print volume: 120 x 68 x 200 mm.

Wanhau are a Chinese 3D printer manuacturer who have released their Duplicator 7 V1.5 3D printer to great acclaim. Unlike most of the printers on this list, the Wanhau Duplicator uses stereolithography technologies, to create parts more quickly and accurately than fused deposition modeling.

This DLP 3D printer has a smaller build area than its competitors on this list due to the nature of stereolithography, but can print with an XY resolution of up to 50 microns. Despite the low price, this cheap resin 3D printer comes with its own software and can be used with third party slicers.

M3D Micro

  • Company based: USA.
  • Price: $300-350.
  • Print volume: 109 x 113 x 116 mm.
  • Weighs just 1kg!

Another American machine, the M3D Micro has dazzled consumers since its release in September 2014. Costing just $300-350, the Micro is an amazingly simple to use, cheap 3D printer which makes it perfect for beginners. It weighs just one kilogram, and is available in a range of different colors.

This Plug & Play 3D printer has a fairly compact print volume at 109 x 113 x 116 mm. It also has a minimum layer thickness of 50 microns which is pretty good for the price. Overall, the M3D is the perfect cheap 3D printer for those who want something super easy to use, and don’t need to print massive structures.

Best 3D Printer Under $1000

Prusa i3

  • Company based: Czechia.
  • Price: $600-900.
  • Build volume: 250 x 210 x 200 mm.

This wouldn’t be a valid list without the inclusion of the beast, the Prusa i3. We didn’t specify a specific Prusa i3 model, because frankly, all of them could make this list so we included them all within their category. Another DIY 3D printer kit based on the RepRap philosophy, the Prusa i3 sports a print volume of 250 x 210 x 200 mm, and weighs just over 6kg.

Prusa 3D printers are meticulously designed to be as simple and effective to use as possible. Accurate up to a layer resolution of 50 microns, the Prusa i3 is a precise, cheap 3D printer which dominates its RepRap 3D printer competitors. You can either buy the Prusa fully assembled for around $900 or build your own for around $600. Overall, the king of 3D printer kits, the Prusa is simply marvelous.

Robo C2

  • Company based: USA.
  • Price: ~$700.
  • Print volume: 127 x 127 x 152 mm.

American 3D printer manufacturers Robo 3D launched two printers, the Robo C2 and R2, after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $380,000. The Robo C2 features a sleek design, and can print areas of up to 127 x 127 x 152 mm, though this is less than it’s big brother, the R2.

Costing around $700, the Robo C2 is a consistent and reliable printer which you can trust to complete your model overnight without worry. Featuring layer resolutions of between 20 and 300 microns, the Robo C2 is a great option for the price. Though not as well-known as some of its competitors, the C2 is a cheap 3D printer well worth consideration.

Flashforge Creator Pro

  • Company based: China
  • Price: $999
  • Print volume: 225 x 145 x 150 mm.

Chinese 3D printer manufacturer Flashforge are well-known for making some of the best cheap 3D printers of the last few years, including the Adventurer 3, Dreamer, Hunter, and now the Creator Pro. This dual extruder 3D printer offers a number of upgrades on other models but still costs just under $1,000.

With a minimum layer thickness of 0.1mm, the Creator Pro is fairly accurate for the price. This cheap 3D printer also has a good print volume of 225 x 145 x 150 mm, easily enough for casual printing. The Flashforge Creator Pro is overall a consistent and reliable option for anybody looking for a dual extruder 3D printer.

TierTime Up Mini 2

  • Company based: China.
  • Price: $599.
  • Print volume: 120 x 120 x 120 mm.

Chinese 3D printer manufacturer TierTime’s latest release in the Up! range is another great cheap 3D printer focused on simplicity and ease-of-use. The Up Mini 2 is a sleekly designed machine that wouldn’t look out of place in a well-decorated room, and won’t break the bank either at $599.

Featuring a print volume of 120 x 120 x 120 mm, the Up Mini 2 can’t print anything huge – but this shouldn’t be a problem for casual makers. It also features a minimum layer thickness of 0.15mm. The Up Mini 2 isn’t trying to be the most precise printer, but it is good at being a very easy to use printer which beginners can enjoy.

BQ Witbox Go!

  • Company based: Spain.
  • Price: $750 / £650.
  • Print volume: 140 x 140 x 140 mm.

Made by Spanish tech giant BQ (aka the biggest tech company you’ve never heard of), the Witbox Go! is beautifully designed. Along with the Ultimaker 3, the Witbox Go looks like it belongs in an Apple store (ironically the Ultimaker 3 is actually sold by some Apple retailers).

Costing around $750, the Witbox Go has a maximum print volume of 140 x 140 x 140 mm. The Witbox Go is also very portable, weighing just 4.8kg. Similar to the Up Mini 2, the Witbox Go isn’t trying to print extremely precise geometries, but it is trying to democratize 3D printing by being a very easy to use, cheap 3D printer.
